This term we’ve covered different aspects of reading through 1:1 reading sessions, a group story session and continuous provision. We’ve enjoyed listening and following lots of different stories including ‘Oak Class go to the Circus’, ‘Sparks in the Sky’, ‘Kipper’s Birthday’ and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’. During our group story we’ve been engaging and learning the story through sensory elements, as well as following along by completing our own sequencing storyboards as we go. In our 1:1 reading sessions we’ve begun looking at different letters and sounds, we’ve practised reading skills including turning pages and following the story, identifying between text and pictures and reading familiar words. We’ve also been doing colourful semantics to help our reading comprehension and to be able to answer simple questions which shows our understanding of stories. We also have access to lots of different types of texts in our continuous provision area including storybooks, information books and magazines. Having access to these means that we can enjoy looking at stories together and it promotes reading for pleasure. We definitely love getting all cosy in the reading corner and looking through our favourite books!
